Trichoderma are biological control agents (biofungicides) and biofertilizers containing live, beneficial fungi most commonly Trichoderma harzianum, T. viride, or T. asperellum. These products protect crops by establishing a protective barrier around the roots, actively suppressing soil-borne pathogens, and enhancing nutrient uptake
Active ingredient: consists of live, beneficial soil fungi—most commonly Trichoderma harzianum, T. viride, or T. asperellum
Benefits:
Broad-Spectrum Protection: Protects against root rot, damping-off, wilt, and collar rot in a variety of crops, including vegetables, fruits, and field crops.
Root System Development: Enhances root growth, nutrient uptake (specifically phosphorus and micronutrients), and plant vigor.
Soil Health Enhancement: Decomposes organic residues, improves soil structure, and reclaims stressed or degraded soil.
Sustainable & Eco-friendly: Leaves no toxic residues, is safe for beneficial microbes, and helps build long-term immunity against diseases.
Compatibility: Works well with biofertilizers and organic manures
Modes of Action
Mycoparasitism: The Trichoderma fungi grow around the hyphae of pathogenic fungi and secrete lytic enzymes to break down and consume them.
Competition: Trichoderma grows faster than most pathogens, quickly establishing itself in the rhizosphere (root zone) and starving pathogens of nutrients and space.
Antibiosis: It produces secondary metabolites that inhibit or kill surrounding pathogenic microbes
Application Methods:
- Seed Treatment: Coating seeds with the product before planting.
- Soil Drenching: Applying a mix to the soil at the base of plants.
- Drip Irrigation (Fertigation): Delivering the product through existing irrigation systems.
- Seedling Dip: Soaking plant roots in a Trichoderma solution during transplanting
Advantages:
- Safe: Non-toxic to humans, animals, and beneficial insects.
- No Residue: Ideal for IPM (Integrated Pest Management) and organic farming.
- Soil Health: Promotes a healthier, more nutrient-efficient, and balanced ecosystem.
- Compatibility: Generally compatible with organic manure, but should not be mixed directly with chemical fungicides
