Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Palm weevil trap) is an integrated, eco-friendly monitoring and mass-trapping device designed to protect palm trees (coconut, date, oil, areca) from infestation.
It uses a species-specific pheromone lure combined with a food bait (kairomone) inside a durable plastic bucket to capture and kill adult weevils, preventing larvae damage.
Active ingredient: 4-methyl-5-nonanol (90%) and 4-methyl-5-nonanone (10%)
Usage and Maintenance:
Installation: Placed on the ground, often half-buried to facilitate entry, and usually in the shade.
Density: Recommended to use 2–4 traps for small gardens and 40-50 traps per hectare for large-scale, cost-effective mass trapping.
Durability: The traps are durable, robust, and designed to last over several seasons
Benefits:
Eco-friendly: Non-toxic, species-specific control that reduces reliance on pesticides.
High Efficiency: Attracts and captures both male and female weevils, reducing reproductive potential.
Long-lasting: Pheromone lures usually last 90 days, with the trap itself having a 6-7 year lifespan
