Penistrepto is a veterinary, broad-spectrum antibiotic injectable suspension used to treat severe bacterial infections in livestock.
It contains a combination of Procaine Penicillin G and Dihydrostreptomycin, which work synergistically to eradicate both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Contains: Procaine Penicillin 200mg
Dihydrosteptomycin sulphate 200mg /ml
Action mode: Penicillin targets mainly Gram-positive bacteria (e.g., Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Clostridium), while Dihydrostreptomycin kills Gram-negative bacteria (e.g., E. coli, Salmonella, Pasteurella). Together, they provide a broad antibacterial barrier.
Dosage Guide:
Always shake the suspension well before use. Dosages vary slightly depending on the exact brand concentration, but the general standard is outlined below:
- Cattle and Horses: 1ml per 25kg of body weight.
- Pigs, Sheep, and Goats: 1ml per 25kg of body weight.
- Dogs and Cats: 1ml per 10kg of body weight.
Benefits:
Synergistic Action: The two antibiotics work together to defeat bacteria more effectively than either could alone. Penicillin destroys bacterial cell walls, which allows the streptomycin to penetrate the bacteria and inhibit protein synthesis.
Broad-Spectrum Coverage: Penicillin is highly effective against Gram-positive bacteria, while streptomycin targets Gram-negative bacteria. This makes it a great choice for mixed infections or when the exact bacteria causing the illness is unknown.
Cost-Effective Treatment: It is widely used in livestock to support recovery from respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary, and soft-tissue infections.
Reliability in Lab Settings: In addition to veterinary use, variants of this antibiotic combination are routinely utilized in scientific research to prevent bacterial contamination in mammalian cell cultures
Administration:
- Route: Administer via deep intramuscular injection (IM). For dogs, it can also be administered subcutaneously.
- Frequency: Typically administered every 24 to 72 hours, depending on the severity of the infection and your specific product's instructions. The treatment usually lasts for 3 to 5 days.
- Site: Inject into large muscle masses (e.g., the gluteal or neck muscles for cattle and horses
Withdrawal Periods
- Meat/Milk Withdrawal: Do not slaughter animals for meat or consume milk during treatment and for a set number of days afterward. These times vary strictly by formulation (meat ranges from 18 to 30 days, milk ranges from 0 to 4 days).
- Contraindications: Do not use in animals known to be allergic to penicillins. Avoid using it on small herbivores (like rabbits, guinea pigs, or hamsters) as it can disrupt their gut flora.
- Pregnancy: Procaine penicillin can cause abortions in sows; always consult a veterinarian prior to use on pregnant animals.
