The Onion Red Superior is a high-yield, premium short-day hybrid variety. It produces highly uniform, globe-shaped bulbs with a distinct, deep violet-red skin.
It is widely favored by East African growers for its strong pungency, excellent shelf-life, and resistance to early bolting.
Key features:
Maturity: 85 to 100 days after transplanting.
Yield Potential: Average of 20 to 25 tons per acre under good management practices.
Seed Rate: 1 kg to 1.5 kg per acre.
Bulb Characteristics: Medium to large globular shape, firm with good multiple scale leaves.
Storage & Market: Offers mid-long storage capability if kept dry and well-ventilated.
Disease Tolerance: Strong natural field tolerance to Pink Root Rot.
Cultivation Tips:
- Nursery Preparation: Sow in a raised nursery bed and allow the seedlings to grow for about 45 days before moving them to the main field.
- Spacing: Transplant with a spacing of 20–30 cm between rows and 5–10 cm between individual plants.
- Climate: Performs exceptionally well in warm seasons and is highly adaptable to most East African ecological zones
